In 1995 the Guild
began a project that has evolved into an unusual tradition.
With Marilyn Druin’s suggestion we asked each member to
create a 4”x4” tile with the theme of animals –
realistic, imaginary, large, small. When all of the tiles were
collected, Marian Slepian mounted them in an interesting
arrangement and we donated the mural to a hospital in Rockland
ME for their children’s wing. Since then we have donated
five more to non-profit organizations or hospitals. We find
that the projects stimulate our creativity, inform the public
to enamels, provide colorful murals to institutions and bring
much pleasure to many people. Each project has a distinct
theme with a specified shape and sized tile. The mountings are
carefully designed to compliment the theme and tiles. The
recipients have been unanimously enthusiastic and pleased with
their gifts. For all, it is a very rewarding tradition.
