Experimenting with Texture & Inclusions
Sunday, May 20  /  10:00 am – 4:00 pm

KathyWood1“What will happen if I embedded this thing in my enamel?” “How can I make my enamel work stand apart from the rest? If you find yourself asking these questions, then this class is for you!

In this one-day workshop we will push the boundaries of traditional enamel techniques and boldly explore incorporating unusual materials (glass or metal based) with the enamel. Stunning effects can be created when cloisonné is combined with other enameling techniques, such as basse-taille, grisaille, painting, etc. We will experiment by incorporating various wires, meshes, and tubing in the enamel. Different materials, such as seed beads, copper shot, sand, and silver foils as well as copper tooling foil all can be embedded within a cloisonné piece. Additionally, overglazes, underglazes, ceramic pencils, and lustres can be applied, with amazing results. The instructor will cover as many of these materials as possible but due to time constraints students may not be able to work with all the materials in the workshop.

Students will experiment with the materials listed above to create unique patterns and textures which can serve as backgrounds for cloisonné work, be used within the walls of the cloisons or without cloisons at all.

Participants will create sample tiles which they can reference down the road. Students should bring their questions and unusual materials to class. Safety and compatibility will be also be covered.

Price: Member $135 / Non-member $160   Limit: 10   Materials Fee: TBD
