hellenwHelen Elliott: Painting on Steel

Two-day workshop:
Wednesday, March 18 & Thursday, March 19
OR
Friday, March 20 & Saturday March 21

This workshop introduces the use of porcelain-coated steel as the base material for examining practices of painting, printing and drawing using liquid enamels. We will be using manufacturers’ steel cut-offs in support of recycling and economy.

Students will be guided by their personal interests and imagery in developing ideas for their work. Liquid enamel is a perfect medium to explore and develop surfaces. Various brushes and other mark making tools will be used to manipulate the medium as pieces of information are erased, added and developed; creating new textures, layers and observations. There will also be opportunities to use jewelry enamels in creating additional finishing possibilities.

Infinity Affinity IEnameling on steel with artist-jeweler Melissa Cameron

Two-day workshop:
Wednesday, March 18 & Thursday, March 19
OR
Friday, March 20 & Saturday March 21

In this class students will learn how to use Thompson’s liquid enamel to enamel onto different gauges and qualities of steel. Students will finish with approximately 6 samples on different gauges, sizes and types of steel.

Experimentation on a series of sample squares, with techniques such as sgraffito, painting, drawing with graphite pencil, stoning/abrading the enamel surface, working with porcelain slip, layering and other techniques, will show the flexibility and diversity of applications of this process. Steel connections will also be discussed, with the aim that artists will be enabled to create completed works of jewelry in steel with minimal additional metal.

Participants will have an opportunity to work on multiple samples that utilize each of the processes, and build up the repertoire of techniques in use on each sample over the course of the two days. Materials to be used include liquid enamels, steel, jewelry / granular enamels, painting enamels (optional).

Chris Darway: Shadow Boxing

Two-day workshop:
Friday, March 20 & Saturday, March 21

Jewelry is small sculpture. It should be presented as such and not just tossed in a drawer when not worn. This workshop will show you how to design a shadow box where your piece can be displayed or removed for wearing. Students will start with a commercially purchased wooden box. We will cover construction of wire mounts, soldering, wood finishes, guilders paste, foils and adhesives.

Katharine Wood: Linear Solutions

Untitled-3One-day workshop:
Saturday, March 21

Learn to translate your designs into enamel with various linear techniques. We will take your design and use several different methods (all based on the line) to create 4-6 little examples of what is possible. We will use sgraffito, P1/P3, ceramic pencils/graphite, painting enamels, and some experimental techniques as well, time permitting.
