Amy Roper Lyons is a studio goldsmith and master enamelist. Her work expresses her love for the wonderful variety of form and color found in the natural world. Inspired by her garden, and long walks on the seashore near her home, she creates one-of-a-kind and limited edition pieces in high-karat gold, enamels, and gemstones. She combines enamel processes like cloisonné, plique-à-jour, and basse-taille with a broad palette of goldsmithing techniques including forming, carving, chasing, and fabricating. Amy’s current work is primarily plique-à-jour, a technique where the enamel is applied to a framework of open cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent enamel. It is in effect, a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered to be very technically challenging. Amy will present an array of her work in this talk and share what inspires her.
Amy is a longtime member of Enamel Guild North East and The Enamelist Society. Amy serves as Executive Vice President of Enamel Guild North East.
Patricia Nelson received her MFA from State University of New York at New Paltz. She began her career in education at Ball State University in Muncie Indiana, and throughout her three decades at Ball State, she taught all aspects of metals and foundation design. She has exhibited metal work and enamel work throughout the US for over three decades as well as presenting lectures and workshops nationwide. After her retirement from Ball State in 2016, she assumed the role of president of The Enamelist Society, an international group of artists who use vitreous enamel (glass fired on metal) as an art form. She continues to produce work and teach classes in person and online.

Both Amy and Patricia will have work on display in Insectum Electrum in the Steuben Gallery November 17-23, 2025.
This artist talk is presented in tandem with Insectum Electrum, on exhibit during NYC Jewelry Week in Pratt’s Steuben Gallery. Insectum Electrum explores the world of arthropods and other small invertebrates through the lens of enameled jewelry. Each of the 14 enamel artists celebrate the intricate beauty of insects, arachnids, butterflies and moths, brought to life in jewelry featuring stunning detail and craftsmanship which includes the vibrant fusion of science, nature, and design. Insectum Electrum was curated by The Enamelist Society, an international group of artists who use vitreous enamel (glass fired on metal) as an art form.
