In keeping with our mission to promote the art of vitreous enameling, the Enamel Guild North East is sponsoring an open call for original enamels from around the world. In this online exhibition, we seek works in a broad range of styles to highlight the various approaches to this demanding, ancient medium. Submissions may be in any category, jewelry, as well as wall pieces, 3-dimensional pieces, decorative, or utilitarian, as long as vitreous enamel is a major component of the piece and completed within the past 3 years. Work exhibited in Under Fire 2 may not be included in submissions. All works must be original and produced by the artist.

Jurors:

Ruth Ball, England, is an experienced self-employed designer maker specializing in enamels, engraving, and enamel painting. She produces a variety of artifacts ranging in scale from jewellery, small objects, and wall based panels of a domestic size, to larger pieces suitable for corporate or public display. She has achieved top prizes in the Royal Society of Arts Award and The Platinum Competition, was granted a British Society of Enamellers Bursary to study large scale enameling, Commended in the Goldsmiths Craftsmanship and Design Council Awards, The Platinum Award, and The Royal Society Of Arts Bursary Award. Her exhibition highlights recently include Collect: selected by Goldsmiths Fair, Somerset House, London, RE: Collected – Bluecoat Display Centre, Liverpool, The Silver Festival, Leo De Vroomen, London, Enamoured, group touring exhibition of enamels selected by the BSOE & Guild of enamelers at the Goldsmiths Centre, London. Mi-Sook Hur is an award-winning enamelist, metalsmith and Professor in the School of Art and Design at East Carolina University. Her work focuses on the realistic images inspired by nature and she explores the modern studies of Limoges enamels. Hur has exhibited nationally and internationally, highlights include LOOT in the Museum Arts and Design, SOFA, Chicago, Tong-In Gallery, Korea, Itami Museum of Arts and Crafts, Japan, and Vicenza Oro II, Italy. Her work has been featured in The Art of Enameling: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration, 500 Enameled, Nouvel Object V, and Metalsmith. Hur has received Prize Awards from The Enamelist Society, the Niche Awards, the Purchase Award from Arkansas Arts Center, and the European Design-an Asian Renaissance Evoked in Gold Award from the World Gold Council. Her work is included in the collections of the Enamel Arts Foundation, Racine Art Museum, John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sunny & Gloria Kamm, and Arkansas Arts Center. She has taught workshops at the Penland School of Crafts, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, the Newark Museum, Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft, EGNE (The Enamel Guild North East), and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Sienna Patti founded Sienna Patti Contemporary in 1998 and specializes in contemporary studio jewelry and artists that use craftsmanship as an intellectual and structural vehicle for their ideas. A leading figure in studio jewelry, Patti has lectured extensively at universities and museums as well as contributed to multiple publications. Since 2000 she has curated over 150 exhibitions in and out of the gallery and presented artists and exhibitions at art and design fairs worldwide. As an advisor and appraiser to major public and private collections Patti has placed works in museums around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; The Museum of Modern Art in New York; Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australia; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Smithsonian Institution, D.C; Museum of Art And Design, New York; Museum of Fine Art, Houston; Museum of Fine Art, Boston; Musee de Louvre, Paris;  Philadelphia Museum of Art. https://siennapatti.com/

 

Entry requirements:

  • All works must be original and produced by the artist.
  • This call is open to the international community, 18 years old and over.
  • Works may be in any category: jewelry, wall pieces, sculpture, vessels or other, as long as vitreous enamel is a major component of the piece.
  • All works must be original and produced by the artist and  completed in the last three years.
  • Applicants may submit up to 5 pieces, with up to 3 additional views each.
  • Upload images at 72 dpi, at least 750 pixels but no more than 1500 pixels in any direction.
  • Digital  images should be cropped to show only your enamel work.
  • Submitted photos will be for juror selection as well as online gallery. Poor quality photos or work not conforming to the submission requirements will not be considered.
  • Work is selected based on creativity and technique.

 

Fees:

During this difficult time of global pandemic isolation, EGNE wishes to offer support for the enamelist community by providing an opportunity to share their work. Hence, we have set the submission fees drastically low in hopes of encouraging everyone to submit.

  • $15 EGNE members;  (login and check your membership status in the login area on the home page)
  • $20 for non-members;
  • ** SPECIAL OFFER FOR NON-MEMBERS:  Join EGNE as a member at the same time as applying for Under Fire 3 and receive this special offer: $40 for both membership AND application fee (otherwise a $55 value.)
