Experimental Enamel:  Introducing Rust

The workshop will explore how you can enhance enameled steel pieces with the introduction of rust. The emphasis is on experimentation.

It will cover the various steels you can use, how to prepare and apply liquid enamels and explore different tools for mark-making. We will explore abrading surfaces prior to the rusting process and the pros and cons of natural rusting vs accelerated processes. Finally, some cheats with copper will be discussed.

The emphasis is on experimentation and breaking the rules. Students will be set a challenge to do in the week between sessions and their samples will be shared and discussed in the second session. There will be a private Facebook group for students to join with information, resources and scope to share work and ask questions.

AMANDA DENISON BIO

Amanda Denison is an English Jewelry Artist, living and working in West London. She originally studied fine art which influences her approach to jewellery making; texture and mark-making are key elements in her pieces.

Amanda’s approach to enameling is experimental. She is fascinated by the interplay between rust and enamel and exploring how far this can be taken. Each piece is a one-off and although processes can be repeated, rusting is unpredictable and often yields unexpected results.

Amanda’s work has been exhibited throughout the UK and Internationally. Her work has been featured in many magazines and books on jewelry making.
