Cloisonné-193-2Creating Fine Silver Clay Elements for Enameling (Skill level: All Levels)
Instructor: Terry Kovalcik

Friday, March 18 & Saturday, March 19

Enameling on fine silver metal clay is a wonderful experience. PMC Flex is very easy to work and the clay can even be manipulated in its leather hard stage to make cloisonné settings for enamels.

It takes on any shape or texture. One of the best qualities of silver clay is its ability to capture deep textures that would be very laborious to achieve using traditional methods. Transparent enamels look great on deep textured backgrounds.

Learn the process of working with PMC Flex clay to prepare a base for your enameling projects. Create textured backgrounds using a variety of techniques—assembling cloisonné cells, texturing, embossing, carving and more.

Each participant will create a few fine silver elements that will be fired during the workshop. These elements can be used in a variety of enameling techniques—ready to take back to your studio to enamel later.

Material Fee – approximately $125 for the Flex Silver clay kit will be collected at the workshop.

(Please note: Each kit will contain a relative amount of PMC silver that they will utilize during the workshop. Personal usage may vary dependent on the size and volume of work you create. The price of PMC is based on current market price of silver as of October 2015 and may fluctuate. Additional materials will be available for purchase.)

“Working in metal clay allows me to go beyond two-dimensional space.”

After more than 30 years working as an illustrator, I was drawn to metal clay as a way to bring form and movement into my art. Many of my pieces are made of multiple elements that hang, dangle and swing with the movement of the body. This gives the piece life and adds an element of whimsy.

After sketching my designs on paper, it’s the process of creating, sculpting and assembling these pieces that are most gratifying. I’ve become passionate about making boxes that allows me to work on both the inside and outside designs—with the mystery of its interior and the secrets that can be hidden inside. These little surprises are special gifts to the wearer that they can choose to share with others. I create a sense of color and space through the use of various surface treatments — from highly polished silver to dark, textural matte finishes.

Seeing these 3D forms come alive nourishes my creativity. As I continue to work in metal clay, I find that these wearable objects have a unique ability to capture the inspiration I see in the world around me.
